We have compiled a suggested "Must-see" for your stay at Olive Grove. This activity schedule comprises five individual day trips. You can do the lot or select the stages best fitting into your holiday plans. Click here to check out those exceptional trips.

Mountain bikes can be hired and offer an alternative means to explore the local area. The 20 minute ride to the beach is a must, with fantastic scenery and an unspoiled beach line, safe for swimming or walking.

• Picnics and BBQ's. Picnic hampers by arrangement.
• North Otago Golf Club. 15 minutes drive from Olive Grove, an 18 Hole course, Par 72. Magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean and the mountains.

• Local Horse-riding can easily be arranged on request.

Yellow-eyed Penguin

• Located between Oamaru and Moeraki, Olive Grove is ideally situated for the famous Moeraki Boulders, or take Lyn's 100% natural penguin tour at the Moeraki Lighthouse, home of the Yellow Eyed Penguins as well as New Zealand fur seals and spotted shags. Oamaru provides the facilities to view the Blue Penguins at night, offers historic walking tours, or visit the Whitestone Cheese factory and café, the North Otago Museum and The Forrester Gallery.

• Alternatively visit Trotters Gorge, Shags Point, Totara Estate, Graves Dam, Vanishing World or the Elephant rocks, the location of the film setting for The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, all conveniently situated in the surrounding area. Most of these places are not commercially run enterprises, so there are not lots of people there and they are FREE!.


Tours are available at the local Oamaru Stone quarry in Weston. Oamaru stone is a unique limestone used for carving. Parkside Quarry is the only quarry providing Limestone building materials in New Zealand.

• Oamaru is renowned for its architecture. Many of the magnificent 19th century buildings are fashioned from Oamaru limestone.

• View the spectacular night sky with no light pollution to detract from the bright planets, stars, Southern Cross, Milky Way and often satellites going overhead.
